One of the coolest stories that I can share with people is attached to this great piece of art that hangs in my livingroom. Check out the large painting and I will tell you the story at the end of the post.
Okay, you made it this far I will tell you the story. I was on kijiji one day browsing through the local ads. I spotted a pic of this piece of art. The picture showed the harness race horses (standardbreds) racing around the track. I am a big fan of harness racing, it is one of my favorite things to spend free time watching, I absolutely love it. So when I seen the painting I was immediately attracted to it.
I clicked on the ad and seen the lady selling it wanted $60 for it. I drove over to her house to see it and knew immediately I was buying it. It was even more colorful and larger than I could tell from her pic in the ad. My girlfriend laughed at me, thought I was crazy for buying it. The story behind its origin was that it once hung in a building at the "Calgary Stampede Grounds", but was taken down during renovations and was being tossed out. The lady I got it from was an employee and saved it from the trash and took it home. It had been sitting in a closet in the basement for the past few years.
Once I got it home and hung in my livingroom, I decided I would see if I could find any info on the artist. Turns out that the artist has went on to make quite a name for himself painting western theme paintings. His name is Paul Van Ginkel and his studio is Paul Van Ginkel studios in Calgary, Alberta. Turns out that my painting is actually worth a few thousand bucks. I'm not selling, but it sure was cool to find out that it had some history and value to it.
